What to Do in Stirling: A Local's Guide

Stirling is one of Scotland's most history-soaked towns: a castle on a crag, a battlefield that changed a nation, and an old town packed with character. Whether you've got a day or a weekend, here's a local's guide to what to do in Stirling, ending with one stop a lot of guides miss.

Stirling Castle

Start at the top. Stirling Castle is one of the grandest in Scotland, perched on volcanic rock with views for miles. Royal palace, great hall, centuries of Scottish history; it's the obvious must-see, and it earns it.

The National Wallace Monument

Climb the tower built to honour William Wallace and you'll get one of the best views in central Scotland, along with the story of the Battle of Stirling Bridge, the very battle that inspired our Battle Strength Gin.

The Old Town and Bannockburn

Wander Stirling's medieval old town: cobbled streets, the Church of the Holy Rude, the Old Town Jail. A little further out, the Battle of Bannockburn visitor centre brings Robert the Bruce's famous victory to life.

Stirling Distillery: the stop most guides miss

Right below the castle, in the Old Smiddy, you'll find us: Stirling Distillery, the town's first legal distillery and the first to make whisky in Stirling in over 170 years. It's a genuinely different way to spend an hour. You can:

It's a short walk from the castle, which makes it the perfect way to round off a day of sightseeing: history in the morning, a dram in the afternoon.

Practical tips

Stirling is compact and walkable, so you can see a lot on foot, though the climb to the castle and monument will earn you your dram. It works brilliantly as a day trip from Glasgow or Edinburgh, under an hour by train, or as a weekend base for exploring the Trossachs and Loch Lomond nearby. Spring and autumn are quieter than peak summer if you'd rather dodge the crowds.

Make a day of it
