Angels' Share Glass Whisky Dropper

Sustainability, with proof behind it.

At Stirling Distillery, we're exploring practical ways to become a more sustainable business. From rethinking future whisky packaging to improving the energy performance of the historic Old Smiddy, we're committed to making thoughtful changes that matter.

Aluminium whisky: testing a better future for the bottle

A research partnership exploring sustainable packaging for premium spirits

Over the past year, we have partnered with Heriot-Watt University to investigate whether Stirling Whisky could be offered in aluminium packaging when it is ready in 2027. The project focuses on two important questions: whether the whisky profile would change in this type of packaging, and whether customers would consider buying a premium whisky in a non-traditional bottle format.

Research partner: Heriot-Watt University

Key research questions

  • Would the whisky profile change in aluminium packaging?
  • Would customers be willing to buy premium whisky in this non-traditional format?

What we learned

The research so far suggests that aluminium could be a significantly more sustainable option than glass, but only if it is paired with the right internal liner to protect the spirit over time. That means the opportunity is real, but so is the need for careful testing.

Two Heriot-Watt dissertations approached the aluminium packaging question from different angles.

Energy efficiency at the Old Smiddy

To better understand how our historic home can operate more efficiently, we commissioned Graham + Sibbald to carry out an energy efficiency assessment of the Old Smiddy at Lower Castlehill. Completed in July 2023, the survey reviewed the building’s thermal performance, heating and lighting systems, and other energy-using equipment to identify where improvements could be made.

The report highlighted practical, non-invasive recommendations to reduce energy use, improve comfort, and lower both operating costs and carbon emissions. We have been integrating these findings into the business as part of our wider effort to improve sustainability while respecting the character of the building.

What comes next

We will continue to explore practical ways to reduce the impact of how we make and package our spirits, while upholding the standards expected of Scotch whisky. For us, sustainability only matters if it works in practice, protects quality, and stands up to scrutiny.
