Young Distiller Hugo McCann Named Employee of the Year at Scotsman Scran Awards 2025
The team at Stirling Distillery is thrilled to announce that 19‑year‑old distiller Hugo McCann has been awarded Employee of the Year at last night’s Scotsman Scran Awards—a prestigious accolade recognising exceptional individuals in Scotland’s food and drink industry.
In a ceremony attended by industry leaders across Scotland, Hugo was acknowledged for his dedication, skill, and passion. Despite his youth, Hugo has already made a remarkable impact by reviving whisky production in Stirling—the first since 1852—and overseeing the creation of the distillery’s acclaimed new‑make spirit, which went on to win Best Scottish New Make Whisky at the World Whiskies Awards 2025.
“It’s absolutely surreal,” said Hugo. “I never imagined being named Employee of the Year at 19. I’m just honoured that my work making whisky in Stirling is being recognised.”
Hugo’s day‑to‑day responsibilities include managing every stage of the whisky process—mash bills, fermentation, distillation cuts, cask filling—as well as quality control and visitor engagement. Known for his hands‑on approach and attention to detail, he is equally comfortable cleaning the stills, analysing distillation charts, speaking on camera, or leading tours with enthusiasm and knowledge.
The judges praised Hugo for "consistently going above and beyond in the food and drink industry, exemplifying outstanding dedication, work ethic, and a commitment to customer satisfaction".
Sustainability is also a core part of Hugo’s work at the distillery. He is currently collaborating with Heriot-Watt University to explore and test innovative, eco-friendly packaging solutions for the launch of Stirling’s first whisky in 2027—ensuring that environmental responsibility is built into the foundations of this historic revival.
His mentors, including former Diageo master blender Chris Clark and industry peer Zak Shenfield, have spoken highly of his technical ability, professionalism, and rapid development.
Hugo’s win sends a strong message about the value of youth in Scotland’s whisky scene. It cements his status not only as a local hero in Stirling but also as an ambassador for young talent across the nation’s booming food and drink sector.
Congratulations to Hugo on this outstanding achievement!
